In this edition of Silver Lake news, we’re taking a look at the Spanish cuisine scene in the area. It’s a lot more vibrant these days, thanks to Bar Moruno. With a prime location along Sunset Blvd, this spot tends to bring out the nostalgia and the taste of home for Spanish immigrants while further expanding the palates of local residents.
The Backstory
The original branch of Bar Moruno opened in February 2016, by chef Chris Feldmeier and David Rosoff. Located at The Original Farmers Market, the spot received an impressive 3-star review not long after from known LA food critic Besha Rodell. The original Bar Moruno also received a “spectacular” rating from New York Times food critic and Gourmet Magazine editor-in-chief Ruth Reichl. Unfortunately, the place had to close after barely a year of operations. At the time, the Moruno team was looking for a “more logistically suitable location.” Fast forward to six and a half years later, and Feldmeier and his team are back up and running. And by the looks of things, they’re stronger than ever.
An Authentic Feeling of Madrid in California
Patrons who have been to Bar Moruno couldn’t help but feel an extraordinary vibe that instantly brings them elsewhere. As Rachel Macalisang of the Daily Trojan describes it, the decor alone already “echoes pieces of Spanish history.” But the focus of attention, according to her, lies in the open kitchen that boasts of its wood fire oven. That, alone, should give you an idea of what to expect in terms of its cuisine.
As for the bar list, it has a wide variety of selections, from the beloved Estrella Lager on draft, to different beverages from Spain to Southwest France. For those who are into cocktails, there is a Spanish twist to the classic gin and tonic, as well as Sherries from the city of Jerez and Tempranillo from Rioja. And of course, there is the all-time favorite tinned fish, which people just can’t get enough of.
Bar Moruno is open from Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday from 5 PM to 10 PM, and on Friday and Saturday from 5 PM to 11 PM.
