For this edition of Silver Lake news, we’re looking at a new spot opening along Sunset Blvd and Hyperion Avenue. It is taking the place of the former Surplus Value Center, and it brings a unique twist to the neighborhood.
Neighborhood Goods, a Dallas-based enterprise, will be moving into the old military surplus store. The company has already submitted its plans to set up a shop where it will sell a wide variety of merchandise, from fragrances to jewelry and clothing.
‘Reshaping the Notion of Department Stores’
When Mark Masinter and Matt Alexander launched Neighborhood Goods, they had one goal in mind: to provide shoppers with a different experience. Their shops are a hybrid of the traditional department store, pop-up shop, and online retailer. They’ve also leveraged digital technology with the help of cameras throughout the store, which captures the average demographic of shoppers on a regular basis. For General manager Coy Barton, his employees aren’t salespeople, but “storytellers trained to represent and explain the brands.”
Not the Cafe You Imagined
As for the rooftop cafe, it is probably not what you expected when you read about this. As the Eastsider notes, it will be a restaurant called Sunny’s which will serve Italian cuisine and “a full line of alcohol.”
Many Silver Lake residents will notice how much of a contrast this establishment will be from its predecessor. Surplus Value Center, a military surplus shop, used to occupy this said space. It had been in existence since the 1950s, making it an iconic landmark for residents, veterans, in particular.
Unfortunately, like many small businesses, Surplus Value Center wasn’t able to withstand the early onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic. In October 2020, the longtime establishment was forced to close its doors, leaving a huge void in the community.
Neighborhood Goods already has three other branches: along South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas, in Legacy West in Plano, Texas, and in Chelsea Market in New York City.
