Cities are wonderful places, but they can also get quite lonely if you don’t have a better sense of who it is that you’re sharing them with. Here are a few tips on what you can do to enjoy a better sense of the Silver Lake community.
- Reach out to your neighbours – Part of what makes living in a city great is that you are surrounded by people you don’t know. That distance gives you some space and privacy in the midst of so many people. However, that doesn’t mean that we should never reach out to our neighbours. Offer them food, check in on them, and make conversation when you run into them. Not only will this enrich your immediate surroundings, but it will also help you foster a sense of community.
- Get involved at a local level – Los Angeles is a huge city where there’s always something going on, we all know that. The best part about that is that you won’t have to go far to find something to do and that your immediate community can offer all sorts of opportunities for activities. Be sure to look up what’s happening, be it events, volunteering, local organizing, farmers’ markets, swap meets, or anything else. You might be surprised by what you find and who you meet.
- Make use of your neighbourhood facilities – Did you know you can get free access to audiobooks through your library? That they also offer all sorts of classes, lessons, and workshops? How much use do you get out of your local park and all its amenities? Have you looked into what local businesses could replace the ones you tend to drive to? How about the local bus and rail routes? There are so many incredibly accessible resources located well within your reach that you should be making the most of!
